Genesis 17:1
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.
In Genesis 17, God appeared to Abram when he was 99 years old and made a covenant with him. God changed Abram's name to Abraham, meaning 'father of many nations,' and promised to make him the father of many nations. God also promised that kings would come from Abraham's descendants and that the land of Canaan would belong to them. As a sign of this covenant, God commanded Abraham and all the males in his household to be circumcised. This was to be a physical reminder of the covenant between God and Abraham. Abraham immediately obeyed God's command and circumcised himself, his son Ishmael, and all the males in his household. Through this covenant, God showed His faithfulness and commitment to His promises. Despite Abraham and Sarah's old age and the seemingly impossible circumstances, God assured them that they would have a son, Isaac, through whom the covenant would continue. This chapter highlights the importance of faith and obedience in God's covenant relationship with His people.
