About this Chapter

In Genesis 18, God appears to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre. Abraham welcomes three visitors, not knowing that one of them is the Lord. The Lord tells Abraham that Sarah will have a son, even though both Abraham and Sarah are old. Sarah, who is listening from the tent, laughs at the idea of having a child at her age. God questions Sarah's laughter, asking if anything is too hard for the Lord. Sarah denies laughing, but the Lord assures her that she will indeed have a son. After this, the two other visitors leave for Sodom, while the Lord stays behind to reveal His plan to Abraham. The Lord shares with Abraham His intention to investigate the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah, as their sin is very great. Abraham intercedes for the righteous people in those cities, asking if the Lord would spare the cities if a certain number of righteous people are found. The Lord agrees, and Abraham's negotiation ends with the Lord promising not to destroy the cities if even ten righteous people are found.
