About this Chapter

In this chapter, Abraham, who is now old and well advanced in years, instructs his chief servant to find a wife for his son Isaac. The servant is to go to Abraham's homeland and find a wife from his relatives, rather than from the Canaanites among whom they lived. The servant takes an oath to fulfill his duty and sets out on his journey. When the servant arrives at his destination, he prays to God for a sign to help him identify the right woman. He asks that the woman who offers him and his camels water when he asks for a drink be the chosen one. Before he finishes praying, Rebekah, the granddaughter of Abraham's brother Nahor, comes to the well and fulfills the servant's request. The servant is overjoyed and thanks God for His faithfulness. The servant then meets Rebekah's family and explains his mission. He recounts how God led him to Rebekah and asks for their permission for her to become Isaac's wife. Rebekah's family recognizes that this is God's plan and agrees to the marriage. The chapter concludes with Isaac and Rebekah being united in marriage, and Isaac finding comfort and love in his new wife.
