About this Chapter

In Genesis 29, Jacob arrives in the land of his relatives and meets Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother. He sees Rachel at a well and is immediately drawn to her beauty and kindness. Overwhelmed with emotion, Jacob kisses Rachel and weeps. Jacob then reveals his family connection to Rachel, and she runs to tell her father about him. Laban welcomes Jacob into his home and Jacob agrees to work for Laban for seven years in order to marry Rachel, whom he loves deeply. However, after serving the seven years, Laban deceives Jacob by giving him Leah, Rachel's older sister, as his wife. Jacob confronts Laban, who explains that it is their custom for the older daughter to be married first. Laban suggests that Jacob fulfill Leah's bridal week and then he can also marry Rachel, but Jacob must work for Laban for another seven years.
