Genesis 31:3
Then the LORD said to Jacob, "Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you."
In this chapter, Jacob decides to leave Laban's household and return to his homeland. He had been working for Laban for many years, but Laban and his sons had become jealous of Jacob's prosperity. God tells Jacob to return to the land of his fathers, and Jacob gathers his wives, children, and livestock to secretly flee from Laban. When Laban finds out that Jacob has left, he pursues after him. But God warns Laban in a dream not to harm Jacob. Laban catches up with Jacob and confronts him about his departure. Jacob explains that he left secretly because he was afraid that Laban would take his wives and children away from him. After a heated argument, Jacob and Laban make a covenant, promising not to harm each other. Jacob then continues his journey back to his homeland, and he is met by angels of God. He realizes that God has been with him throughout his time in Laban's household, protecting him and blessing him. Jacob builds an altar and names it 'Mizpah,' meaning 'watchtower,' as a reminder of God's presence and protection.
