About this Chapter

In Genesis 32, Jacob is on his way back to Canaan after living with his uncle Laban. He is worried about meeting his brother Esau, whom he had deceived many years ago. Jacob sends messengers ahead to Esau, but they return with news that Esau is coming to meet him with four hundred men. Fearing for his life, Jacob divides his family and possessions into two groups, hoping that if one group is attacked, the other may escape. That night, Jacob is left alone by the Jabbok River, and a man comes and wrestles with him until daybreak. The man realizes that he cannot overpower Jacob and touches the socket of Jacob's hip, dislocating it. Jacob refuses to let go and asks the man to bless him. The man asks Jacob for his name, and when Jacob answers, the man changes his name to Israel, which means 'he struggles with God.' Jacob realizes that he has wrestled with God and survived. The next morning, Jacob sees Esau approaching with his four hundred men. Jacob goes ahead of his family and bows down to Esau seven times. Surprisingly, Esau runs to meet Jacob, embraces him, and they weep together. Esau accepts Jacob's gifts and offers to accompany him on his journey. Jacob insists that Esau go ahead, and they part ways peacefully.
