Genesis 37:1
Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

About this Chapter

In Genesis 37, Joseph, the son of Jacob, had two significant dreams that caused his brothers to become jealous of him. In the first dream, Joseph and his brothers were binding sheaves of grain in the field when Joseph's sheaf rose and stood upright, while his brothers' sheaves gathered around and bowed down to it. In the second dream, the sun, moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to Joseph. These dreams revealed that Joseph would one day have authority over his brothers, which angered them even more. Joseph's brothers' jealousy and hatred towards him grew even stronger when their father, Jacob, gave Joseph a special coat of many colors. To make matters worse, Joseph would often bring back a bad report about his brothers to their father. One day, when Joseph's brothers were tending their father's flocks in Shechem, Jacob sent Joseph to check on them. When Joseph arrived, his brothers saw him from a distance and plotted to kill him. However, instead of killing Joseph, his brothers decided to throw him into a pit. Later, when a group of Ishmaelite traders passed by, Joseph's brothers sold him to them for twenty shekels of silver. They then took Joseph's special coat, dipped it in goat's blood, and showed it to their father, making him believe that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
