Genesis 39:1
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

About this Chapter

Joseph, a young man from the family of Jacob, was sold as a slave to Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Despite his circumstances, Joseph found favor in Potiphar's eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar's wife, however, tried to seduce Joseph. But Joseph refused her advances, saying that he could not betray his master and sin against God. Although Joseph resisted temptation, Potiphar's wife falsely accused him of trying to assault her. As a result, Joseph was thrown into prison, but God was with him and showed him kindness.
