So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Joseph's brothers return to Egypt for a second time to buy grain. They bring Benjamin with them, as Joseph had commanded. When Joseph sees Benjamin, he is deeply moved and has to leave the room to weep. Joseph then invites his brothers to his house for a meal, but they are afraid and think they are being accused of stealing the money that was returned to their sacks. Joseph reassures them and treats them kindly. During the meal, Joseph arranges for his brothers to be seated according to their birth order, which surprises them. He also gives Benjamin five times as much food as the others. After the meal, Joseph fills their sacks with grain and secretly puts their money back into their sacks. As the brothers leave, they discover the money and are filled with fear. When they return home and tell their father Jacob what happened, Jacob becomes distressed. He does not want to send Benjamin back to Egypt, fearing that something bad might happen to him. However, as their food supply runs out, Jacob eventually agrees to let Benjamin go with them, trusting in God's providence.
