About this Chapter

In this chapter, Jacob and his entire family, including his sons and their wives and children, leave Canaan and go to Egypt. God speaks to Jacob in a vision and assures him that He will be with him and make his descendants into a great nation in Egypt. Jacob takes all his possessions and his family, a total of seventy people, and travels to Egypt. When they arrive, Joseph, who is already in Egypt, meets his father Jacob and they have an emotional reunion after many years of separation. Joseph presents his family to Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, and they settle in the land of Goshen. The chapter ends with Joseph giving his family instructions on how to speak to Pharaoh when asked about their occupation, as shepherds were considered an abomination to the Egyptians.
