About this Chapter

In this chapter, we learn about the birth of Moses and the events that shaped his early life. After the death of Joseph, the Israelites multiplied in Egypt. However, the new Pharaoh feared their growing numbers and ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be thrown into the Nile River. Moses' mother, Jochebed, hid him for three months and then placed him in a basket among the reeds of the river. Pharaoh's daughter found the baby and took pity on him, deciding to raise him as her own. As Moses grew up in the palace, he became aware of his Hebrew heritage. One day, he witnessed an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave, and in anger, he killed the Egyptian. Fearing punishment, Moses fled to the land of Midian. There, he helped the daughters of a Midianite priest water their flock and was invited to their home. Moses eventually married one of the priest's daughters, Zipporah, and they had a son together. Through the birth and early life of Moses, we see God's providential hand at work. Despite the hardships and dangers, God protected Moses and prepared him for his future role as the deliverer of the Israelites. This chapter sets the stage for the remarkable journey of Moses and the liberation of God's people from slavery in Egypt.
