About this Chapter

In Exodus 3, Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian, when he came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that although the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. When Moses turned aside to see this strange sight, God called out to him from the bush, saying, 'Moses, Moses!' And Moses responded, 'Here I am.' God then told Moses to not come any closer and to take off his sandals, for the place where he was standing was holy ground. God revealed Himself to Moses as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and He told Moses that He had seen the misery of the Israelites in Egypt and heard their cry for help. God said that He was sending Moses to Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of Egypt and into a land flowing with milk and honey.
