About this Chapter

In this chapter, God announces the final and most devastating plague on Egypt: the death of the firstborn. Moses tells Pharaoh that at midnight, every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the lowest slave. This plague is a direct judgment on Egypt's refusal to let the Israelites go. God also tells Moses that the Israelites should ask their Egyptian neighbors for silver and gold jewelry before they leave Egypt. God will make the Egyptians favorably disposed towards the Israelites, and they will give them their treasures willingly. This is a way for God to provide for the Israelites as they leave Egypt. When Moses delivers this message to Pharaoh, he becomes very angry and threatens to kill Moses if he ever sees him again. Moses responds by saying that Pharaoh is right, he will never see Moses again. This is the final confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh before the plague of the death of the firstborn occurs.
