Easy Bible・Exodus 12
Exodus 12:21
Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb.
The Lord instructed Moses and Aaron to tell the Israelites to take a lamb for each household, slaughter it, and put the blood on the sides and tops of the doorframes of their houses. They were to roast the lamb and eat it with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. This was to be a lasting ordinance for the Israelites, a commemoration of the night when the Lord passed over the houses of the Israelites and struck down the Egyptians. The Israelites did as the Lord commanded, and at midnight, the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the prisoners in the dungeon. However, the Israelites were spared because they had the blood of the lamb on their doorframes. This event marked the beginning of the Israelites' liberation from slavery in Egypt. God commanded the Israelites to observe the Passover every year as a memorial of their deliverance from Egypt. They were to eat the lamb, bitter herbs, and unleavened bread, and no foreigner was allowed to eat it. This celebration was a reminder of God's faithfulness and the redemption of His people.
