Easy Bible・Exodus 18
Exodus 18:13
The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening.
In Exodus 18, Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, visited him in the wilderness. When Jethro saw Moses sitting all day judging the people's disputes, he questioned why Moses was doing this alone. Jethro advised Moses to appoint capable leaders to help him bear the burden of judging the people. Jethro's advice was wise because it not only lightened Moses' load, but also ensured that the people would receive fair and timely judgments. Moses listened to Jethro's advice and implemented his suggestion by appointing leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens to help him in judging the people. This chapter teaches us the importance of seeking advice and delegating responsibilities. It reminds us that we don't have to carry all the burdens alone, but can rely on the wisdom and support of others. It also highlights the importance of fair and efficient leadership in any community or organization.
