About this Chapter

In Exodus 20, God gives the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai. The chapter begins with God speaking to the Israelites, reminding them that He is the Lord their God who brought them out of Egypt. God then proceeds to give the Ten Commandments, which are a set of moral and ethical laws that serve as the foundation of God's covenant with His people. The first four commandments focus on the Israelites' relationship with God. They are: 1) You shall have no other gods before me. 2) You shall not make for yourself an idol or worship any other gods. 3) You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. 4) Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. The remaining six commandments deal with the Israelites' relationships with one another. They are: 5) Honor your father and mother. 6) You shall not murder. 7) You shall not commit adultery. 8) You shall not steal. 9) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 10) You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.
