Exodus 30:1
"Make an altar of acacia wood for burning incense.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, God gives Moses instructions for building the altar of incense. The altar is to be made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. It is to be placed in the Holy Place, in front of the curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant. Aaron, the high priest, is to burn incense on the altar every morning and evening as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. The incense that is to be burned on the altar is to be made of a specific blend of spices, including equal parts of fragrant spices, gum resin, onycha, and galbanum. This incense is to be considered holy and is not to be used for any other purpose. Anyone who makes a similar incense for personal use will be cut off from their people. The Lord also instructs Moses to take a census of the Israelites and to collect a half shekel from each person as an offering to the Lord. This offering is to be used for the service of the Tent of Meeting. The Lord emphasizes the importance of this offering by saying that it is a way for the Israelites to make atonement for their lives.
