Exodus 32:1
When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."

About this Chapter

In this chapter, the Israelites, led by Aaron, make a golden calf to worship while Moses is on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments from God. The people grew impatient waiting for Moses and believed that he had abandoned them. They asked Aaron to make gods for them, and he complied by collecting their gold and fashioning it into a calf. The people then worshipped the calf, offering sacrifices and engaging in revelry. When God saw what the Israelites were doing, He became angry and told Moses to go down from the mountain. God considered the people to be stiff-necked and said that He would consume them in His wrath. However, Moses interceded on behalf of the people and pleaded with God to remember His promises to their ancestors and not destroy them. God relented and did not bring disaster upon the Israelites. Moses went down from the mountain and saw the people worshipping the golden calf. He became angry and threw the tablets containing the Ten Commandments, breaking them. Moses then burned the calf, ground it into powder, mixed it with water, and made the Israelites drink it as a punishment for their idolatry. Afterward, Moses confronted Aaron about his role in the sin, and Aaron offered excuses, blaming the people for their desire for a god.
