Numbers 1:1
The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said:
In Numbers 1, God commands Moses to take a census of all the Israelite men who are twenty years old or older and able to serve in the army. Each tribe is to be represented by a leader who will assist in the counting. The purpose of this census is to determine the number of men available for military service. The leaders of each tribe gather together and assist Moses and Aaron in counting the men. The total number of men counted is 603,550. The tribe of Judah has the highest number of men, while the tribe of Manasseh has the lowest number. The Levites, who are not included in the military count, are separately counted and their duties are assigned. This census serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness to His promise to make the descendants of Abraham into a great nation. It also emphasizes the importance of organization and preparation in the journey towards the Promised Land. God's plan for the Israelites includes both spiritual and physical aspects, and this census is a step towards fulfilling His plan.
