About this Chapter

In Numbers 3, God commanded Moses to take a census of the Levites, who were chosen to serve in the tabernacle. The Levites were to assist the priests and take care of the tabernacle and its furnishings. The Levites were to be dedicated to the service of God and were given specific duties and responsibilities. The Levites were divided into three main families: the Gershonites, the Kohathites, and the Merarites. Each family had different tasks related to the tabernacle. The Gershonites were responsible for the care of the curtains and coverings, the Kohathites were in charge of the sacred objects, and the Merarites were assigned to the heavier tasks of carrying the frames and pillars. God also declared that the Levites were to take the place of the firstborn males of Israel. As a reminder of this, God commanded Moses to redeem the firstborn males of Israel by taking a census of them and setting a price for their redemption. The Levites were given to Aaron and his sons to assist them in their priestly duties and to serve as a reminder of God's grace and mercy in sparing the firstborn males of Israel.
