About this Chapter

In this chapter, God gives instructions to Moses regarding the test for an unfaithful wife. If a husband suspects his wife of being unfaithful, he is to bring her to the priest along with an offering of barley flour. The priest then performs a ritual where he mixes holy water with dust from the tabernacle floor and writes curses on a scroll. The woman is made to drink the water, and if she is guilty, she will experience physical consequences, such as her belly swelling and her thigh wasting away. If she is innocent, she will be unharmed and able to conceive children. This test was meant to bring about a supernatural judgment from God. It was a way for God to reveal the truth and protect the sanctity of marriage. If a woman was guilty of adultery, this test would expose her sin and bring about consequences. On the other hand, if she was innocent, this test would vindicate her and restore trust in the relationship. While this test may seem unusual to us today, it served a purpose in the context of ancient Israel. It was a way for God to intervene in matters of fidelity and ensure justice. It also emphasized the seriousness of the marriage covenant and the importance of faithfulness. Although we may not employ this specific test today, the principles of faithfulness and trust in marriage are still relevant and applicable to our lives.
