About this Chapter

In this chapter, a Moabite king named Balak becomes fearful of the Israelites and sends messengers to a diviner named Balaam, asking him to curse the Israelites. God speaks to Balaam and tells him not to curse the Israelites because they are blessed. However, Balaam agrees to go with the messengers. On the way, an angel of the Lord stands in the path to oppose Balaam. Balaam's donkey sees the angel and refuses to go any further, which angers Balaam. The donkey speaks to Balaam, asking why he is being beaten. God opens Balaam's eyes, and he sees the angel. The angel tells Balaam to only speak what God tells him. Balaam continues on his journey with the messengers, but when he meets Balak, he makes it clear that he can only speak the words that God puts in his mouth. Balak takes Balaam to three different locations, hoping that from there Balaam can curse the Israelites. However, each time Balaam opens his mouth, blessings come out instead of curses. Balak becomes frustrated and sends Balaam away. This chapter teaches us about the power of God's blessing and the importance of obedience. Balaam initially wanted to curse the Israelites for personal gain, but God intervened and used him to bless His people instead. It also reminds us that God can use even a talking donkey to accomplish His purposes. Balaam's story serves as a warning against seeking personal gain at the expense of God's will, and a reminder that we should always seek to align our words and actions with God's plans.
