About this Chapter

In this chapter, God commands Moses and Eleazar to take a census of the Israelites who are twenty years old or older and able to serve in the army. The purpose of this census is to determine the number of men available for military service as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. The total number of Israelite men counted in this census is 601,730, which is a decrease from the previous census taken in the wilderness of Sinai. This decrease is attributed to the fact that all the men who were twenty years old or older at the time of the first census, except for Caleb and Joshua, have died in the wilderness due to their disobedience and lack of faith in God. The descendants of the twelve tribes of Israel are listed, along with the number of men from each tribe. This census serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to make the descendants of Abraham into a great nation. It also highlights the importance of obedience and faith in God's plan for His people.
