About this Chapter

In Numbers 31, the Israelites are commanded by God to take vengeance on the Midianites for their role in leading the Israelites into idolatry and sexual immorality. Moses gathers an army of twelve thousand men, one thousand from each tribe, and they go to war against the Midianites. The Israelites are victorious in battle and kill all the Midianite men, including their five kings, and take the women and children captive. They also plunder the Midianite camp, seizing their livestock and other valuable possessions. However, when they return to Moses and Eleazar the priest, they are rebuked for sparing the Midianite women, who were the ones responsible for leading the Israelites into sin. Moses commands that all the male children and every woman who has slept with a man be killed, but the young girls who have not slept with a man can be kept alive.
