The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock.

About this Chapter

In Numbers 32, the Reubenites and Gadites, who had large herds and flocks, saw that the land of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for their livestock. So they approached Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of Israel with a request to settle in that land instead of crossing the Jordan and entering the Promised Land with the rest of the Israelites. Moses was initially concerned that the Reubenites and Gadites were trying to avoid their duty to fight alongside their fellow Israelites in conquering the Promised Land. However, they reassured Moses that they would still join the rest of the Israelites in battle and only settle in the land after the conquest was complete. Moses agreed to their request on the condition that they fulfill their promise to fight alongside their fellow Israelites. He warned them that if they failed to keep their word, they would sin against the Lord and bring disaster upon themselves. The Reubenites and Gadites agreed to Moses' terms and settled in the land of Jazer and Gilead.
