Numbers 35:1
On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, the LORD said to Moses,
In Numbers 35, God commanded Moses to designate cities for the Levites to live in. These cities were to be given from the inheritance of the other tribes of Israel. The Levites, who were not given a specific portion of land like the other tribes, were to be scattered throughout the land and given cities to live in. The Levites were responsible for the care and service of the tabernacle, and their role was to assist the priests in their duties. By scattering them throughout the land, God ensured that there would be Levites in every tribe to fulfill their duties. The Levites were not only given cities to live in, but also pasturelands for their livestock. God also established cities of refuge within these designated cities. These cities of refuge were places where someone who unintentionally caused the death of another person could flee to for protection. If someone accidentally killed another person, they could seek refuge in one of these cities and be safe from the avenger of blood until they could stand trial and be judged according to the law.
