Deuteronomy 1:1
These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the desert east of the Jordan-that is, in the Arabah-opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.
The book of Deuteronomy begins with Moses addressing the Israelites at Horeb, recounting their journey from Mount Sinai to Kadesh Barnea. Moses reminded the people of God's promise to give them the land of Canaan and how they were to take possession of it. He also appointed leaders to help him in administering justice. Moses then recalled the incident when the Israelites refused to enter the promised land due to their fear of the inhabitants. He spoke about how God punished that generation by making them wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all of them died except for Joshua and Caleb.
