Next we turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan with his whole army marched out to meet us in battle at Edrei.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Moses recounts how the Israelites defeated King Og and conquered his land. They defeated Og and his people in battle and took possession of all his cities, including sixty fortified cities and many unwalled villages. The Israelites completely destroyed every city, killing all the men, women, and children, and taking all the livestock and plunder as their own. Moses emphasizes that the Israelites did not take any of the land of the Ammonites, which was also conquered from King Og. He explains that the land of the Ammonites was given to the descendants of Lot as their inheritance, and they were not to take possession of it. This shows God's faithfulness in keeping His promises to the descendants of Lot. Moses concludes this chapter by encouraging Joshua, who would succeed him as the leader of the Israelites. Moses tells Joshua to be strong and courageous, reminding him that God will go before him and fight for him, just as He did for the Israelites against Og and the other kings they had defeated.
