Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.

About this Chapter

In Deuteronomy chapter 4, Moses urges the Israelites to listen to and obey God's laws. He reminds them of the statutes and ordinances that God has given them, emphasizing the importance of following them diligently. Moses explains that by obeying God's laws, the Israelites will demonstrate their wisdom and understanding to the surrounding nations, who will be amazed at the righteousness and justice of their God. Moses also warns the Israelites not to add or subtract from God's commandments, emphasizing the need to keep them exactly as they have been given. He reminds them of the powerful and miraculous events they witnessed when God brought them out of Egypt, and he urges them to pass on these stories to future generations, so that they may continue to fear and obey the Lord. Furthermore, Moses cautions the Israelites against idolatry, reminding them that they saw no form of God when He spoke to them at Mount Sinai. He warns them not to make idols or worship other gods, for their God is a jealous God who will not tolerate any form of idolatry. Moses concludes his exhortation by reminding the Israelites that God is a consuming fire, a jealous God, and they must therefore serve Him with reverence and awe.
