Easy Bible・Deuteronomy 9
Deuteronomy 9:6
Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
In this chapter, Moses reminds the Israelites of their rebelliousness and the mercy of God. He tells them that they are not receiving the land because of their righteousness, but because of God's promise to their ancestors. Moses recounts the time when the Israelites provoked God to anger by worshiping the golden calf, and how he interceded on their behalf to prevent their destruction. He emphasizes that it was not because of their righteousness, but because of God's love and faithfulness that he spared them. Moses also reminds the Israelites of their continuous rebellion against God throughout their journey in the wilderness. He mentions the instances when they doubted God's power and faithfulness, and how they grumbled and complained against him. Despite their disobedience, God still provided for them, sustaining them with food and water. Moses warns the Israelites not to forget their rebelliousness and the consequences it brought upon them, and to remember that it is God's grace and mercy that they are entering the promised land. This chapter serves as a reminder to the Israelites, and to us as well, that our salvation and blessings are not based on our own righteousness or merit, but on God's grace and faithfulness. It teaches us the importance of acknowledging our rebelliousness and relying on God's mercy and forgiveness. It also serves as a warning against forgetting God's faithfulness and falling into the trap of pride and self-righteousness.
