Deuteronomy 12:1
These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess-as long as you live in the land.

About this Chapter

In this chapter, Moses gives the Israelites instructions on how to worship God once they enter the Promised Land. He tells them that they are to completely destroy all the places where the nations they dispossess have worshiped their gods. They are not to worship the Lord in the same way as the nations around them, but rather they are to seek out the place that the Lord will choose as a dwelling for His Name and bring their burnt offerings and sacrifices there. They are not to worship in their own way, but must follow the Lord's commands. Moses also warns the Israelites not to worship the Lord in the same way as the nations around them, who offer their sacrifices on high hills and under spreading trees. Instead, they are to bring their offerings to the place the Lord will choose, and there they are to rejoice before the Lord with their families, including their children, servants, and Levites. They are to eat their burnt offerings and sacrifices there, and they are not to do whatever they please, but must be careful to obey all the Lord's commands. The Israelites are instructed to be careful not to forsake the Levites, who have no inheritance among the other tribes, and are to share with them the tithe of their grain, new wine, oil, and the firstborn of their herds and flocks. In this way, they will provide for the Levites' needs and the Levites will serve the Lord at the place He chooses. The Israelites are reminded once again to be careful to obey all the Lord's commands, so that they may enjoy the blessings of the Promised Land.
