Deuteronomy 14:1
You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead,
In Deuteronomy 14, God gives the Israelites specific instructions on what animals they are allowed to eat and what animals they are not allowed to eat. The chapter begins by reminding the Israelites that they are God's chosen people and they should not cut themselves or shave their foreheads as a sign of mourning for the dead. They are also reminded to tithe a tenth of their produce each year and to eat it in the presence of the Lord at the place He chooses. God then proceeds to list the animals that are considered clean and can be eaten. These include animals that have cloven hooves and chew the cud, such as cattle, sheep, and goats. However, animals that only have one of these characteristics or none at all, such as camels, rabbits, and pigs, are considered unclean and should not be eaten. The Israelites are also instructed not to eat any sea creatures that do not have fins and scales, such as shellfish and eels. Additionally, they are told not to eat any birds of prey or other birds that scavenge, such as vultures and ravens. The chapter concludes by emphasizing that the Israelites are a holy people to the Lord, and they should not eat anything that is detestable.
