Deuteronomy 15:7
If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother.
Deuteronomy 15 contains laws about lending and giving to the poor. It emphasizes the importance of generosity and compassion towards those in need. The chapter begins by explaining the practice of canceling debts every seventh year, known as the Year of Canceling Debts. During this year, lenders were commanded to forgive any outstanding loans to their fellow Israelites. This was done to prevent poverty and to promote a sense of equality among the people. In addition to canceling debts, the chapter also encourages lending to the poor without charging interest. It teaches that if there are needy Israelites in the land, they should not be turned away but helped generously. The chapter reminds the Israelites that they were once slaves in Egypt and were shown God's mercy and deliverance, so they should show the same compassion to their fellow countrymen.
