About this Chapter

Deuteronomy 16 describes three important festivals that the Israelites were commanded to observe: the Festival of Passover, the Festival of Weeks, and the Festival of Tabernacles. The Festival of Passover commemorates the Israelites' deliverance from slavery in Egypt. It is a time to remember how God brought them out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. During this festival, they were to eat unleavened bread for seven days and offer sacrifices to the Lord. The Festival of Weeks, also known as Pentecost, was a celebration of the harvest. It took place seven weeks after the Festival of Passover. The Israelites were to bring a freewill offering to the Lord in proportion to the blessings they had received from Him. This festival was a time of rejoicing and thanksgiving for the abundance of God's provision. The Festival of Tabernacles, also called the Feast of Booths, was a week-long celebration in which the Israelites lived in temporary shelters to remember their time in the wilderness. It was a time of joy and celebration, and they were to offer sacrifices and give thanks to God for His faithfulness.
