Deuteronomy 19:1
When the LORD your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses,
In this chapter, Moses continues to give the Israelites instructions regarding the cities of refuge. These cities were designated as safe havens for someone who unintentionally killed another person. The chapter outlines the purpose and guidelines for these cities, emphasizing the importance of justice and fairness in dealing with such cases. The chapter begins by stating that when the Lord your God has destroyed the nations in the land He is giving you, and you have taken possession of their land and settled in their cities and houses, you are to set aside three cities of refuge. These cities were strategically located throughout the land to ensure that anyone who accidentally killed another person could easily reach a city of refuge and find protection from the avenger of blood. The chapter also addresses the issue of false witnesses and the importance of conducting thorough investigations to ensure justice. It emphasizes the severity of false testimony and the consequences it can have on the innocent. The chapter concludes by stating that the punishment for a false witness is to receive the same punishment that the accused would have received if found guilty.
