Easy Bible・Deuteronomy 25
Deuteronomy 25:4
Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.
Deuteronomy 25 contains various laws about justice and fairness. One of the laws is about the punishment for a guilty person. It states that if someone is found guilty of a crime, they should be given a certain number of lashes, but not more than forty. This punishment was meant to ensure that justice was served without being excessively harsh. Another law in this chapter is about the responsibility of a man to marry his brother's widow if his brother dies without having any children. This practice, known as levirate marriage, was a way to ensure that the deceased brother's name and inheritance would continue. If the man refuses to marry his brother's widow, she has the right to publicly shame him by removing his sandal and spitting in his face. Additionally, Deuteronomy 25 also emphasizes the importance of fair trade and honest business practices. It prohibits the use of dishonest weights and measures, and encourages people to have accurate and fair business dealings. This reflects God's desire for His people to be just and honest in all aspects of their lives.
