Joshua 5:13
Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"
In Joshua 5, the Israelites have crossed the Jordan River and are preparing to take possession of the Promised Land. As they camped at Gilgal, Joshua encountered a mysterious man with a drawn sword. This man identified himself as the commander of the Lord's army. Joshua fell facedown and worshipped the commander, recognizing him as a divine figure. Joshua asked if he was for them or for their enemies. The commander replied, 'Neither, but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.' He instructed Joshua to remove his sandals, for the place where he stood was holy. This encounter with the commander of the Lord's army reassured Joshua of God's presence and guidance. It reminded him that the battles they were about to face were not theirs alone, but the Lord's. Joshua obeyed the commander's instructions, signifying his submission and reverence for God. This encounter marked the beginning of a new chapter in Joshua's leadership and the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land.
