Israel's Defeat at Ai

Commentary
Passages

Key Passages

Joshua 7:1
But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD's anger burned against Israel.

About this Chapter

After the victory at Jericho, the Israelites were defeated by the people of Ai because Achan had taken some of the devoted things for himself, breaking God's command. God was angry with Israel and told Joshua to find the one who had sinned. Joshua discovered that Achan had taken a beautiful robe, silver, and gold from Jericho and hid them in his tent. As a result of Achan's sin, Israel was unable to stand against their enemies. Achan and his family were stoned to death, and their possessions were burned. This event served as a reminder to the Israelites of the importance of obedience to God's commands.
