Easy Bible・Joshua 8
Joshua 8:1
Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land.
After the defeat at Ai due to Achan's sin, Joshua and the Israelites regrouped and made a plan to conquer Ai. They set an ambush behind the city and sent a small group to attack the city gates, drawing the men of Ai out of the city. When the men of Ai pursued the Israelites, the ambush party entered the city and set it on fire. The men of Ai were caught in a trap and defeated, with none of them escaping. Joshua then stretched out his javelin toward Ai, signaling the ambush party to come out of the city and attack the men of Ai. The Israelites captured the city, killing all its inhabitants and livestock, just as the Lord had commanded. They took the king of Ai alive and hanged him on a tree until evening. Joshua and the Israelites offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings to the Lord. They followed the instructions given by Moses in the Book of the Law, and the people of Israel renewed their covenant with God. Joshua read all the words of the law, including the blessings and curses, to the entire assembly of Israel, both men and women, children, and foreigners who lived among them.
