About this Chapter

After the death of Moses, God spoke to Joshua and reminded him that there was still much land to be conquered. This included the remaining territory of the Canaanites, the Philistines, and the Geshurites. God instructed Joshua to divide the land among the nine and a half tribes of Israel, as the tribe of Levi would not receive a portion of the land but would instead be given cities to live in. The land that was yet to be conquered included the territories of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, and the Geshurites. God assured Joshua that He would drive out these nations before the Israelites, just as He had done with the other nations they had already defeated. Joshua was responsible for dividing the land among the tribes, and each tribe would receive their inheritance according to the size of their population. The chapter goes on to list the specific boundaries and cities that were to be given to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh on the east side of the Jordan River. These tribes had already received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan because Moses had given it to them. The chapter concludes by mentioning that Moses did not give any land to the Levites, as their inheritance was to be the offerings made to the Lord.
