Easy Bible・Joshua 22
Joshua 22:5
But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to obey his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul."
After helping the other tribes conquer the Promised Land, the eastern tribes, Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, were allowed to return to their allotted land east of the Jordan River. Before they left, Joshua blessed them and reminded them to obey God's commands and to love Him with all their hearts and souls. When the tribes arrived at the Jordan River, they built a large altar near the river. This alarmed the rest of the Israelites because they thought the eastern tribes were turning away from the Lord and building a separate altar for worship. So they gathered together to go to war against their own brothers. Before going to war, Phinehas the priest and some leaders from the western tribes went to the eastern tribes to find out why they had built the altar. The eastern tribes explained that they built the altar not for worship, but as a reminder to future generations that they too were part of God's people. They assured the western tribes that their loyalty to God remained strong. After hearing this, the western tribes were relieved and praised God for their brothers' faithfulness.
