Easy Bible・Judges 8
Judges 8:10
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with a force of about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of the armies of the eastern peoples; a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen had fallen.
After defeating the Midianites, Gideon pursued the two Midianite kings, Zebah and Zalmunna, and captured them. However, he faced opposition from the men of Succoth and Penuel, who refused to provide food and support for his weary troops. Gideon promised to return and punish them after his victory. Gideon then executed Zebah and Zalmunna, and returned to Succoth. He punished the men of Succoth by beating them with thorns and briers. He also destroyed the tower of Peniel and killed the men of the city for their refusal to support him. Gideon's actions demonstrated his determination and strength as a leader. The Israelites were so impressed with Gideon's victory over the Midianites that they wanted to make him their king. However, Gideon refused, stating that the Lord alone should rule over them. He also requested gold earrings from the spoils of war, which he used to make an ephod. Unfortunately, this ephod became a snare for Gideon and his family, leading them astray from worshipping the true God.
