About this Chapter

In Judges 9, Abimelek, the son of Gideon, conspires to become king by killing his seventy brothers. He hires worthless and reckless men to help him carry out his plan. However, Jotham, the youngest son of Gideon, stands on Mount Gerizim and delivers a parable to the people, warning them of the consequences of making Abimelek their king. Jotham's parable tells the story of trees looking for a king. The olive tree, fig tree, and vine all refuse to leave their fruitfulness to rule over the trees. Finally, the bramble, a worthless and thorny bush, accepts the role of king. Jotham uses this parable to show the people that if they make Abimelek their king, disaster will follow. As predicted by Jotham's parable, Abimelek becomes king and reigns for three years. However, God sends an evil spirit between Abimelek and the leaders of Shechem, resulting in their mutual destruction. Abimelek attacks Shechem and burns the tower where the leaders have taken refuge. In return, a woman throws a millstone from the tower, crushing Abimelek's skull. Realizing his impending death, Abimelek orders his armor-bearer to kill him with a sword to avoid being killed by a woman. Thus, Abimelek's rebellion against his own family ends in his own demise.
