Easy Bible・Judges 11
Judges 11:29
Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.
Jephthah, a mighty warrior, made a vow to the Lord that if he was victorious in battle, he would sacrifice as a burnt offering whatever came out of his house to greet him upon his return. The Lord granted him victory, but when Jephthah returned home, his only daughter, his only child, came out to meet him. Jephthah was devastated, but he kept his vow and sacrificed his daughter as he had promised. This chapter serves as a reminder of the importance of keeping our promises to God, even when it is difficult or painful. It is important to note that while Jephthah's vow may seem extreme to us, it was a result of his own choice and not something commanded by God. God does not desire or require human sacrifices, as we see throughout the rest of the Bible.
