About this Chapter

This chapter tells the story of a Levite and his concubine. The Levite and his concubine were traveling to the hill country of Ephraim when they decided to spend the night in the town of Gibeah. However, they were not welcomed by the people of Gibeah and were forced to spend the night in the town square. An old man from the town saw them and invited them to his house for the night. While they were enjoying a meal, a group of wicked men from the town surrounded the house and demanded that the Levite be handed over to them. Instead, the Levite's concubine was thrown outside to the men, and she was abused throughout the night. The next morning, the Levite found his concubine dead at the doorstep. He took her body and cut it into twelve pieces, sending one piece to each of the twelve tribes of Israel. This act of horror caused a great uproar among the Israelites, leading them to gather together and take action against the people of Gibeah.
