Judges 21:25
In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.
After the Israelites mourned for the tribe of Benjamin, who were nearly wiped out in a battle, they realized that they had sworn not to give their daughters in marriage to the remaining Benjamite men. In order to fulfill their oath and preserve the tribe of Benjamin, they came up with a plan to provide wives for the Benjamites. They decided to attack the city of Jabesh Gilead, kill all the men and non-virgin women, and take the virgins as wives for the Benjamites. The Israelites sent twelve thousand men to Jabesh Gilead and instructed them to kill all the males and non-virgin females. After the battle, they found four hundred young virgins and brought them back to the camp at Shiloh. However, this was not enough to provide wives for all the Benjamites, so they came up with another plan. They told the remaining Benjamites to hide in the vineyards, and when the young women of Shiloh came out to participate in the festival, they were to each kidnap a woman and make her their wife. This way, the Benjamites could have wives without breaking their oath. The Israelites assured the Benjamites that they would intercede on their behalf if any of the other tribes became angry about this plan. In the end, the Benjamites were able to find wives and the tribe of Benjamin was preserved.
