Easy Bible・1 Samuel 6
1 Samuel 6:19
But God struck down some of the men of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the LORD had dealt them,
After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they were plagued with tumors and death. They consulted their priests and diviners, who advised them to return the ark to the Israelites with a guilt offering of golden tumors and golden rats. The Philistines prepared a new cart and two cows that had never been yoked before, and placed the ark and the guilt offering on the cart. The cows took the cart straight to Beth Shemesh, a town in Israel, where the people rejoiced at the sight of the ark. The Philistines witnessed the power of the God of Israel as they saw the cows pulling the cart without turning aside. The people of Beth Shemesh offered sacrifices to the Lord and gave thanks for the return of the ark. However, some of the people looked into the ark and were struck down by God. Fearing the holiness of the ark, the people of Beth Shemesh sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim, asking them to take the ark away. The ark was then taken to Kiriath Jearim and placed in the house of Abinadab, where it remained for many years. The people of Israel mourned for the Lord's discipline, but they also recognized His power and holiness. This event reminded them of the importance of revering God and following His commands.
