1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

About this Chapter

In 1 Samuel 16, Samuel is sent by God to anoint the next king of Israel. He goes to Bethlehem and invites Jesse and his sons to a sacrifice. As each of Jesse's sons pass before Samuel, he assumes that the eldest son, Eliab, would be the chosen one because of his appearance. However, God says to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.' (1 Samuel 16:7) After seeing all of Jesse's sons, Samuel realizes that none of them are the chosen one. Then, David, who was tending the sheep, is brought before Samuel. God tells Samuel, 'Rise and anoint him; this is the one.' (1 Samuel 16:12) This chapter teaches us an important lesson about how God sees people. While humans tend to judge others based on their outward appearance or achievements, God looks at the heart. He values qualities such as faith, humility, and obedience. In the case of David, although he was the youngest and least likely candidate for kingship, God saw his heart and chose him to be the future king of Israel. This reminds us that God's ways are different from ours, and He often chooses the unexpected and unlikely to fulfill His plans. As we reflect on this chapter, we are reminded to focus on developing our inner character and cultivating a heart that is pleasing to God. Our outward appearance or worldly achievements may not impress God, but a heart that is devoted to Him and seeks to follow His will is what truly matters. Let us strive to be people after God's own heart, just like David.
