About this Chapter

In 1 Samuel 20, Jonathan helps David escape from Saul's wrath. David and Jonathan make a covenant to protect each other, and Jonathan comes up with a plan to determine Saul's attitude towards David. Jonathan is deeply saddened by his father's hatred towards David, and he warns David to flee for his life. They say their goodbyes and David goes into hiding. Jonathan arranges a secret signal to let David know if it is safe to return. David hides in a field while Jonathan talks to his father, Saul. Saul becomes angry and hurls a spear at Jonathan, revealing his true intentions towards David. Jonathan sends a young boy to retrieve the arrows he shoots, and based on the boy's location, David understands that he must flee. Jonathan and David meet for the last time and reaffirm their covenant. They express their love and loyalty towards each other, knowing that they may never see each other again. David flees, and Jonathan returns home, both of them heartbroken by the circumstances they find themselves in.
