Key Passages

1 Samuel 21:1
David went to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech trembled when he met him, and asked, "Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?"

About this Chapter

In this chapter, David, who is on the run from Saul, goes to the town of Nob to seek help and provisions. He meets Ahimelek the priest and asks for food. However, since David is alone and without any companions, Ahimelek gives him the holy bread that is reserved for the priests. David also asks for a weapon, and Ahimelek gives him the sword of Goliath, whom David had slain. When Saul hears about David's visit to Nob, he becomes angry and accuses Ahimelek of conspiring against him. Saul orders his men to kill Ahimelek and all the priests in Nob. However, Saul's men refuse to harm the priests, so Saul commands Doeg the Edomite to carry out the massacre. Doeg kills eighty-five priests and destroys the town of Nob. This chapter highlights David's desperate situation and the lengths he goes to in order to survive. It also demonstrates the consequences of Saul's jealousy and paranoia, as innocent people suffer because of his actions. Despite the challenges he faces, David remains faithful to God and continues to trust in His protection.
